Phonics:

Phonics is taught throughout Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 on a daily basis where children are split into ability groups.

Reading Carousel:

All pupils are grouped according to ability and will spend approximately 20 minutes each day doing an activity to develop their reading skills. Two of these daily activities will be "guided" by a teacher or teaching assistant which means that every child will experience two intensive "guided" reading sessions per week.

Literacy:

Reading is taught through synthetic phonics based on the Letters and Sounds phonic programme. We use a variety of reading schemes, mainly Oxford Reading Tree.  During daily reading workshop carousels the teacher and teaching assistant teach reading through guided groups on a rota basis. Daily phonic sessions are taught within three ability groups. Homework is given at the end of each week relating to the phonics we have worked on in class.

Mathematics:

We aim to make maths as much fun as possible through daily singing, playing board games and by doing various practical problem solving activities. There are also lots of 'real life' maths opportunities when we are working in the kitchen area with Mrs Horne on a Friday afternoon.

PE:

This term we will have PE on a Monday and on a Thursday  so please remove earnings before school on these days. Remember to label all of your child's clothing and footwear.

ICT:

Children will have daily access to interactive games where they can practise their mouse skills.  We will also learn how to download pictures and how to programme toys to follow a route.

    Art and Craft:

We love doing arty activities in Year 2 too.

    Y2 Tests (SATs):

The children in Year 2 will be taking end of Key Stage One tests in May.

Please click here to watch a short video about the tests.

Homework:

Your child will usually have three reading books in their book bag:

 - A self-chosen levelled reading scheme book (mainly Oxford Reading Tree), which should be a comfortable read for your child.

 - A guided reading book (Literacy Links reading scheme) which will be more challenging and have a teaching focus outlined in your child’s reading diary.

 - A self chosen library book for you to read to your child.

Try to hear your child read at least three times a week, paying particular attention to the teaching focus for the guided read book. Please sign their white diary or leave a comment when they have read at home.

Mathletics and Spellodrome homework is set every Friday for completion by the following Friday. If you find you are struggling with this, please encourage your child to attend our very popular homework club which takes places every Monday lunchtime in the Y2 classroom.
